UK to ban porn (kinda)

My country is such a god damn nanny state, I can’t believe this is happening at all – its regressive as all hell, next thing you know women won’t be able to have skirts above their ankles and we’ll just fully revert back to Victorian England. Obviously that’s a bit dramatic, but what’s happening is definitely stupid. As the Gov’t make a move to ban porn and cripple the free and easy access to it we currently have. This is the digital economy bill, and before it even gets passed, I’ll tell you exactly how it will fail.

First of all let me just quickly address the constant Tory attack on the pornography industry. It’s not just proposals to force ISPs to ban access to porn websites if they don’t comply with strict ID and age verification checks. The Tories have also banned certain kinds of porn from even being filmed in the UK. So bad news to all you people aspiring to become the next UK based water sports industry leader, because you cannot legally film that here any more. There were also other planned measures to filter porn – where if you didn’t call your ISP up and ask to be put on the I want porn list you would be unable to access it at all. It’s a really stupid idea. Yes, children access porn and we don’t want them to, so get better at stopping your kids from accessing porn, don’t just blanket ban porn for everyone.

Anyway, here’s why its dumb as heck.

Banning a porn website isn’t difficult, anyone can do it through their router settings, it takes about 5 mins, less if you’re adept at computers. But if you block say… Google.com but don’t block Google.co.uk – then you can still access Google. The cat and mouse chase of blocking domain names only for another domain name to spring up in its place has been happening for years already. See; pretty much any torrent site, The PirateBay Alone has over 70 reserve domains.  These torrents sites are still not difficult to access as they often have new domains, and the ones that are blocked can still be access through use of a proxy or VPN – which are essentially like a condom for your internet connection. An extra layer of internet that protects you and what you’re viewing.

Oh I see you there, saying “Gee Cursed how are kids going to get around the strict ID checks though?” – Really, really easily. See, any porn site that doesn’t comply will be banned. The Government can’t force anyone to comply and most porn sites are based abroad adding an extra hurdle to overcome. The Gov’t think that simply banning them is going to work, but as I’ve already explained, proxies and VPNs really disagree with that idea. Which makes them still accessible anyway and still able to show children the stuff you don’t want them to see.

And if you don’t think children are clever enough to use them, trust me you are wrong. I grew up in the 90s, so computers weren’t really a big thing when I was a child. I still remember the safety filters on school computers though, and how easy they were to get passed. We discovered proxies through trying to get passed school filters in 2003 to play games on Miniclip… when I was 12. This really isn’t going to be a challenge for today’s children to overcome, who have been literally raised on computers. Once one child finds out how to avoid filters and blocks, that information spreads through a school so quickly. Then you block that one way, and someone else find’s a way. It’s unstoppable.

If you’re trying to get kids to stop having access to pornography, this isn’t the way to go about it. All this is going to achieve is making it harder for adults who aren’t so tech savvy to be able to access porn. Which ironically, will probably result in them asking their kids how to get passed the blocks.

Though, given all the attempts to quash the pornography industry in the UK, I really wouldn’t be surprised if this was just Tories being tories and dressing this issue up as saving the kids! When really, they’re just squeamish ol’ conservative types trying to force other people to live the way they want to. I mean, they can’t be that stupid to think children won’t get passed these blocks easily, or that they’ll have any measurable effect on stopping kids watching porn, right?

Geez… your conservatives are like nazis compared to Canada’s conservatives xD. I mean, it was a consevative PM that legalized gay marriage here, so imagining conservatives, in the west, and not in the U.S.A or Australia that are so sexphobic they want to restrict it to anyone to ”protect the children”… it’s sounds so ridiculous. Plus, how WILL it protect children? They probably will see porn someday right? So why not teach children about it at the start of their puberty, you know, instead of letting them believe whatever until they get sex ed in school. I never understood why some people believe porn is such a ”corrupting” thing for the mind. It’s just people fucking, it’s nothing special, and that’s what children should think of it: it’s boringly normal. The best way to make sure children don’t care about it is to not make it a taboo… children love to break the rules! They love the thrill of risking being caught doing something ”wrong” but not illegal, just morally ”wrong” according to adults. If they think porn is ”meh” they won’t see as much of it, they’ll look at it, not care because they arent’ old enough to be stimulated by it, and come back a few years later when they hit the peak of their puberty. That’s if you teach them its normal. Sigh. Why do conservatives always think throwing moral panics solve anything?

Well it was conservatives who legalised it here too – but its like… literally the only worthwhile thing they can claim to have done. They get it out everytime they need people to remember they aren’t total shitbags.
